Is Conflict Always a Bad Sign?

Hello,

I recently heard a phrase on NPR that caught my attention:

“
Let’s burn it down. Why are we playing by different rules?

The conversation was about political polarization, but the sentiment made me think about something much closer to home: our relationships.

Sometimes we reach a point where we feel like the balance in a relationship isn't fair. Maybe we feel that our needs aren't being considered, that we're giving more than we're receiving, or that the same expectations don't seem to apply to everyone.

Over time, this can lead to frustration, resentment, or even apathy. We may begin wondering, Why am I still trying? When we don't feel like we can grow or thrive within the existing patterns, it can be tempting to give up on the relationship—or on the rules altogether.

These moments can be uncomfortable. But conflict isn't always a sign that something has gone wrong. Sometimes conflict brings attention to patterns that weren't working and creates an opportunity to reconsider what we need.

That doesn't necessarily mean "burning it all down." Sometimes it means having an honest conversation. Sometimes it means setting a boundary, changing an expectation, or finding a different way of relating. And sometimes, it means recognizing that a relationship or situation needs to change more significantly.

A Reflection...

What happens when we stop asking, “How do I keep making this work?” and instead ask, “What would make this relationship more supportive, balanced, and sustainable?”

Conflict can be uncomfortable, but it can also create space for something new. Sometimes the disruption is where growth begins.

We want to know... how do you feel about conflict? Do you believe it always has to be a bad thing?

At Fresh Perspective Therapy, we believe there is value in making room for these conversations—with ourselves and with one another.

If you'd like to explore topics like this with others, consider joining our Thursday evening drop-in group at 7 PM. The first session always is free. Interested? Let us know here.

Warmly,
