Fresh Perspectives: Juneteenth and Our Shared Humanity

Hello,

As Juneteenth approaches, some people may wonder what this day means for them personally, especially if their own family history is not directly connected to slavery or emancipation. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom. This occurred roughly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation and marked the delayed enforcement of freedom for approximately 250,000 enslaved people.

One reason to recognize Juneteenth is that it invites us to reflect on the kind of communities we want to create—ones rooted in dignity, equity, and humane treatment for all people. Progress toward justice benefits not only those who have been excluded, but society as a whole.

This idea is explored in The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee, which examines how division and inequality can ultimately harm entire communities. Similarly, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, challenges readers to consider how systems and policies can shape opportunities and outcomes for different groups.

I am also reminded of a simple perspective often shared by the Dalai Lama.

When meeting others, he encourages us to first see another human being—before race, religion, education, or any other difference. While our experiences may vary, our shared humanity remains.

Juneteenth offers an opportunity to learn, reflect, and celebrate a significant step toward freedom and equality. It is also a reminder that healthy communities are built when we recognize one another's worth and continue striving for greater compassion, understanding, and belonging.

Hi everyone, It’s no wonder many of us look forward to Labor Day—a chance to pause, step away from our usual responsibilities, and simply have some time off. Our lives can become very structured. There are places to be, things to accomplish, people to care for, and endless lists of things waiting to be done. Even our free time can sometimes feel like another opportunity to be productive. But what happens when we allow ourselves some unstructured time? Time without a task or an expected...

Hello, I recently heard a phrase on NPR that caught my attention: “ Let’s burn it down. Why are we playing by different rules? The conversation was about political polarization, but the sentiment made me think about something much closer to home: our relationships. Sometimes we reach a point where we feel like the balance in a relationship isn't fair. Maybe we feel that our needs aren't being considered, that we're giving more than we're receiving, or that the same expectations don't seem to...

Hi everyone, Recently, we attended an event at the Randallstown Library featuring authors sharing books centered around different mental health experiences and themes. Two authors especially stood out. Marissa D'Angelo shared about her memoir, Chasing Time, a story exploring the complicated relationship with a loved one struggling with addiction. The author spoke about wanting readers to remember that people experiencing addiction are still deeply valuable, caring people, and that addiction...
